Bylaws Will Establish Neighborhood Naming Process - Vote at Annual Meeting
The Mayor and City Council have received the list of recommendations from the Stakeholder Advisory Committee which reviewed nomenclature in Fairfax related to Confederate history. The committee recommended that the City rename Old Lee Highway and other streets and also recommended that our neighborhood, Old Lee Hills, should be renamed (the city does not have authority to change the name of neighborhoods). In April or May, the Mayor and City Council will vote on which street names should be changed. No change will be immediate - new names will need to be selected, new street signs installed, and changes to maps will need to be planned.
The OLHCA Board has unanimously agreed that our neighborhood needs a process to make a decision, with input from residents, to –
1. Decide whether Old Lee Hills should be renamed, and
2. If so, to choose a new name.
We are proposing to amend the OLHCA bylaws so that in the future, any decision about a name change can be made through a transparent process with input from the entire neighborhood.
